Ficus carica 'Black Mission' ('Black Mission' Fig)

Height: 15-18 feet
Spread: 12-15 feet
Light: Full to part sun; can handle more shade than most other fruit trees.
Soil: Amended, moist but well-drained soil.
Description: One of the most popular varieties of fig currently available on the market. It was introduced from Spain by missionaries around the turn of the century. In midsummer, expect a high yield of purple-black, medium to large fruit. Flesh is pink with an excellent sweet flavor. ‘Black Mission’ figs are great fresh or dried and glazed and are often sold as a candy substitute. After fruiting, keep the tree pruned to a bushy 10’ so you can enjoy all of the fruit without getting out a ladder.
