Cunninghamia lanceolata ‘Glauca’ (Blue China Fir)

Height: 40-50 feet
Spread: 15-20 feet
Light: Sun to partial shade
Soil: Well-drained soil
Description: The striking steely-blue long needles of this unusual conifer rival or surpass the best blue spruce cultivars. 'Glauca' is also considered much hardier than the species. It forms a very handsome horizontally branched conical-shaped tree with pendulous tips. This species grows large (80 feet high) in its native haunts of southern, central and western China. Brown bark of mature trees exfoliates in strips to reveal reddish-brown inner bark. This is a prized timber tree in China. Genus name honors James Cunningham, a British doctor who collected this species in 1701-2.
